Getting outdoors on the South Coast
Wandering off the Mattapoisett Rail Trail and Phoenix Bike Path
Hello and Welcome to the first of a series of places to explore on the South Coast. My name is Cecile Callahan and I am the founder of Mattapoisett Living and a full time real estate agent for Bold Real Estate in Mattapoisett.
The opening of the Mattapoisett Rail Trail from Mattapoisett Neck Rd to Goodspeed Island has been a game changer! You can now go from points of Mattapoisett to Fairhaven with ease along these two connected trails. What I enjoy is exploring beyond the trails. On a recent bike ride I started at Depot Street/Goodspeed Island in Mattapoisett and took in the beauty of the newest part of the Mattapoisett Rail Trail and headed to Fairhaven. While on the Phoenix bike path portion I took the left on the bike path to the wind turbines. Take a break and get off the bike and just hang out under the turbine and listen. It’s also a great photo spot. Nearby there are remains of an old stone building. You can also take the trail to the water. Returning back to the main bike trail, I continued on to Shaw Road and took another left heading towards the Shaw farm. It is so beautiful this time of year with all corn fields; another fun photo spot. Next, I continue on Shaw Road until l you get back onto the Phoenix bike trail. Enjoy the ever changing beauty along these trails. Head to the end of the bike trail and treat yourself to an ice cream at The Ice Cream cottage on 12 Ferry St, in Fairhaven. It’s adorable and often a line but worth it! For the Fall, it is just open on weekends only. Now you need to head over to Fort Phoenix and explore! I took Fort street and took my time to check out all the beautiful antique homes .. as a Real Estate agent I love to check out homes and Fairhaven has plenty of these beauties.
I spent a good period of time exploring the park, as it’s a great spot to enjoy a picnic and take in views of the fishing boats returning to port. There are rest rooms that were open if needed.
Now for the return back home..it was looking like rain so kept to the main bike path but got in a 16 mile ride with lots of fun along way. If you are not familiar with these trails feel free to reach out to me.
If you haven’t made a visit to either of these trails you need to get outdoors and explore.
